TASK 1 (Exploration)
Principles of Design
- Gestalt theory
Gestalt theory explains how the human brain interprets visual information as a whole rather than simply perceiving them as individual elements.
- Contrast
Contrast is about using opposite visual elements to capture audience attention, usually to generate impact, highlight importance, create visual dynamics.
- Emphasis
Emphasis is the use of various elements such as color, shape or value to create focus in design work.
- Balance
Balance is the visual equilibrium that refers to the distributional weight in a work of design, it can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.
- Repetition
Repetition of design elements aims to create rhythm and pattern to increase visual excitement by enriching surface interest.
- Movement
Movement refers to the way the eye travels over a design, it can be done by adjusting emphasis and designing elements position.
- Harmony & Unity
Harmony involves the selection of elements that share a common trait to create a sense that all of the elements of your design fit together.
Unity refers to the repetition of particular elements that are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.
- Symbols
Symbols refer to signs, shapes, or objects that are used to convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text.
- Word and Image
Imagery is a vital part of design as if it is paired with the right words, it will deepen the meaning of the design.

Design that I chose :

| "Kindness Matters" by Yi-Chih Lin |
This artwork is the grand prize winner of the 2018-2019 Peace Poster Contest held by Lions Clubs. The contest aims to promote peace, kindness and unity in line with the UNSDG No. 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions. This contest is held yearly in many different countries, one of which is my country, Indonesia. I participated in this contest twice. At the time, I was in elementary school and still didn't know much about the importance of peace, justice and strong institutions. However, growing up and seeing what happens in many different parts of the world, I realize it is really important for us to preserve peace, justice and hold a strong institution. Therefore, I chose this poster for this project.
Design principles that I observed in the design:
- Gestalt theory
I see the whole image as peace symbolism to spread awareness of the importance of peace and kindness.
- Contrast
There is use of contrasting colors such as orange and blue that create a certain impact on the design. As well as the use of darker color tone with lighter color tone to create highlights.
- Emphasis
There are variety of colors and shapes in the artwork making it more appealing and not monotonous.
- Balance
This poster's visual elements proportion is quite balanced. The weight on both sides of the artwork is almost symmetrical. Although the orange color outshine the blue color in some parts of the design making it a little unbalanced.
- Repetition
There are some repetition of elements. For example, the repetition usage of humans with similar color palettes and flags.
- Movement
The poster is designed to highlight the peace symbolism to one's eyes as the main focus, then followed by the other visual components.
- Harmony & Unity
The designs follow a common theme in both color and shape creating oneness.
- Symbols
The pigeon and the symbol inside the heart both symbolize peace and kindness while the heart symbolizes love.
- Words and Images
The imagery of some people conditions that needed help and the title, deepen the meaning of the design as well as better conveying the intended message.
