Reflection:

This module has been very fun and taught me a lot of things about Design Thinking 5 phases. My group research topic is about Period Poverty, which was a pretty unfamiliar topic to me. At first, I thought it was about regular poverty like money or food poverty. Turned out, it was about menstrual poverty. But I did learn a lot because at school it has never really been properly covered. We were also very fortunate to have our client explaining the topic which was really helpful for us to properly understand the topic.

Stage 1 - Empathy

The empathy stage is the first phase in the Design Thinking process. The goal is to understand the people we are designing for like their needs, feelings, behaviors, and challenges. So, my group decided to do interview with sets of questions. Our target audience are mothers and young adults. So for my interview, I interviewed my high school friends, Sammy. At first, it felt a bit awkward asking questions about period, but luckily it went smoothly. Below is the interview transcript:

Stage 2 - Define

The next stage is Define, which is stating the problem based on insights from the previous stage. So my group gathered all of the interview responses and sort them to affinity diagram. After that, we created 2 user persona, one for mothers and one for young adults.

Stage 3 - Ideate

After that is the Ideate stage, where we brainstorm and generate a wide range of creative ideas and possible solutions based on the defined problem. In class, the lecturer, Ms. Wong, gave us an activity where we need to write or draw ideas on paper in given amount of time. This activity was pretty fun because we get to express our ideas without having to think too much of it's doability or affordability. Based on the gathered ideas from our group members, we selected a few options, then we decided to go with the vending machine idea as our product.

Stage 4 - Prototype

In the Prototype stage, we need to utilize our design skills as design students. My group divided each task to each member based on their specialization. As I specialize in UI/UX, I was given the task to design the mobile app UI for our product. So I created the prototype using Figma. I enjoyed this stage because it involves creative skills.

Stage 5 - Testing

Lastly, we need to test our prototype in order to know whether our product is effective or not. So we asked 3 female students to test our product. It was pretty stressful because there were few issues. But we managed to gather their opinion and feedback.

Overall, this project helped me better understand how design can help solve social issues like period poverty. MoonBlooms is not just a vending machine, but a platform that spreads education, awareness, and positive change. Through this project, I learned that good design is not only about how something looks or works, but about creating solutions that truly meet people’s real needs.
