Week 1 : Introduction to Mobile Application Design

Application design is the foundation upon which great software is built. It encompasses the visual aesthetics, the way users interact with the product, and the overarching principles that guide the entire development process.

Why App Design is important :

Provide a seamless user experience, boosting engagement, retention, overall customer satisfaction, improve app performance and accessibility, intuitive navigation, and responsive layout.

Importance of Mobile in the Digital Era :

Ubiquity of smartphones, mobile-first approach, shift in user behavior, and competitive advantage.

Unique Challenges :

Limited screen real-estate, diverse device capabilities, contextual awareness.

User-Centered Design (UCD) :

1. Research
2. Design
3. Evaluation

Benefits of UCD :

Increased user satisfaction, reduced development costs, improved product adoption, and enhanced brand reputation

Designing for Mobile Usability :

Understand user needs, prioritize key features, optimize for mobile, validate and iterate.

Designing for Small Screens :

Compact layout, intuitive navigation, tactile interactions, visual hierarchy.

Conclusion and Key Takeaways :

Cohesive UX, continuous optimization, emerging trends.

Week 2 : The Art of User-Centered Design

UCD is a design philosophy that puts users at the forefront of the entire product development process.

UCD Process :

Discover/analysis, define, design, validate, and develop.

ROI of UCD :

Improve credibility, improve performance, increase exposure, rand reduce resource burden.

User Interface (UI) :

Focus on visual elements, incorporating brand elements, balancing aesthetics with usability.

User Experience (UX) :

Focus on user impression and satisfaction, analytical and research- based.

Week 3 : Usability Designing Products for User Satisfaction

What is Usability :

Usability refers to the effectiveness, efficiency, and success of a user in utilizing a product or design within a specific context. Usability asks how well users can achieve their goals within a product or design, considering how quickly they can learn it and how many errors they encounter.

Common Usability Pitfall:

Complex interfaces, confusing navigation, lacks of clear calls to action, inadequate error handling.

Key Principle of Usability :

1. Consistency
2. Simplicity
3. Visibility
4. Feedback
5. Error Prevention

Week 4 : Presentation

In this week, we needed to present our final mobile application proposal. After presenting, the lecturer provided some feedbacks for final improvement before submission.

PROJECT

Project 1 : Mobile Application Proposal

Instructions

  • Choose a mobile application that has poor user experience (UX) or user interface (UI) design.
  • Perform surveys, interviews, and market studies related to the chosen app and its user base.
  • Prepare proposal document which clearly explain the problem with the current app's UI/UX and also key features for the redesign.
  • The proposal will be reviewed to determine if the app idea is suitable for the next development phase.
  • Continuously refine and improve the idea based on feedbacks.
Proposal must include:
  1. Introduction – States the purpose and importance of app design on user experience.
  2. Background – Reviews the current app, its pros and cons, and user needs.
  3. Goals – Outlines redesign goals and how they’ll improve the user experience.
  4. User Research – Explains how user feedback and testing will guide the redesign.
  5. References – Lists sources and inspirations used in the design process.

Week 1 - Draft Proposal

For this week's assignment, we are tasked with evaluating three company apps that are not famous, have over 100 reviews on the App/Play Store and feature more than 10 unique pages. Our objective is to identify design flaws in their user interface (UI) and user experience (UX), and propose enhancements.

After some researching, I chose these 3 apps for my draft proposal:

- Goodreads
- MyDigi
- BCA Mobile

I discovered Goodreads through researching, while the other apps (MyDigi & BCA Mobile) were apps that already downloaded in my phone. I chose them because I felt that their UI/UX design are outdated and needed some improvement.

After that, I began collecting Users' review in App Store and starting to analyze the design problem of the apps. I created my draft proposal in Figma. Next I consulted with the lecturer, he provided some feedbacks so I revised my proposal based on the given feedbacks, here is the result:

Week 2 - Final Proposed Idea

In this week we needed to choose one of the app from the draft proposal for our final proposal.

Instructions:
- Finalize the progress slide.
- Refer to the Week 2 lecture slides for guidance, as the last two slides outline what needs to be included.
- For the final proposed idea, focus on just one company's app.
- This document will assess if the mobile app concept is worthy of moving forward to the next development stage.
- The assignment is due in Week 4.
- Remember to update your e-portfolio by documenting your thoughts and progress throughout the assignment.
- Any detected plagiarism will result in penalties.

After some thinking, I decided to go with BCA Mobile for my final proposed idea. After that, I began my final proposal.

Week 3 - Finalised Proposal

For this week we needed to have some progress for our final proposal. Here is my progress for this week :

Fig 1.4 Final Proposal Progress

I followed the instructed proposal format by including Introduction, Background & Context, Goals & Objectives, User Research, and Reference. For the sub-title, I followed the senior's format :

- Introduction (Purpose of Proposal, Importance of Mobile Application Design, Impact of UI/UX)
- Background & Context (App Description, App Current Design, Ratings & Reviews, Strength vs Weakness, Weakness & Solution, Competitive Analysis, Data Comparison, User Demographics, User Needs)
- Goals & Objectives (Redesign Objective, Primary & Secondary Goal, Design Strategy)
- User Research (User Research Method, Plan for User Testing, Conclusion)
- References (References)

Week 4 - Finalised Proposal (Presentation)

In this week, we were required to present our final proposal. After presenting, the lecturer will give feedbacks for final improvement before submission. Based on the feedbacks given to me after my presentation, I made my final improvement :

1. Add short explanation for Primary and Secondary Goal

2. Highlight the changes made in inbox (before vs after)

Fig 1.6 Final Improvement 2

3. Move the "Weakness & Solution" slides to after "Strength vs Weakness" slide

After these improvements, here is my final mobile application proposal for BCA Mobile :

FEEDBACK
Week 2:
General feedback: Make sure to include page name and highlight important parts of the user reviews.
Special feedback: The lecturer commented that the design of BCA Mobile app is very bad, and because it is an Indonesian app, if I were to chose it for my final proposal, I have to make sure that I survey the correct and relevant audience which preferably are Indonesian.
Week 3:
General feedback: Keep working on the proposal.
Special feedback: -
Week 4:
General feedback: The proposal is fine but there are some improvement that can be made.
Special feedback:
- Add short explanation for Primary and Secondary Goal
- Highlight the changes made in inbox (before vs after)
- Move the "Weakness & Solution" slides to after "Strength vs Weakness" slide

REFLECTION
Working on the app redesign proposal was a valuable and eye-opening experience. At first, I wasn’t entirely sure how to begin, but once I broke the project into smaller steps, it became much more manageable. This assignment helped me understand what it really means to design with purpose. It’s not just about making an app look nicer, but about solving real problems that users face and making their experience smoother. Throughout the process, I learned how to see things from a user’s point of view and not just as a designer. I also improved my ability to clearly explain my ideas and support them with logic and research.
